Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve with a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
