TikTok Provides Viewers Power to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Their Feeds

The Broader AI Trend

AI on the Platform

The platform disclosed that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its network tagged as made with AI. In total, more than 100 m media items are added to the platform daily, making AI content a limited portion of its total content library.

In addition, the platform will now attach an AI-generated watermark to content made using its own AI tools, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for identifying content made by AI. This action is designed to help prevent users from attempting to evade the disclosure requirement.

Platform Protection

The platform has supported its moderation strategy, following controversy over plans to lay off numerous safety staff in Britain. The company is planning to cut hundreds of positions in its content moderation team in its British office, with worker representatives and online safety experts expressing worry that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A company official explained that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but AI can safeguard staff by removing the most graphic content ahead of it is viewed by humans. The platform announced a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content seen by human moderators over the past year due to the use of its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” she said. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s very important to minimize viewing of unsafe media as rapidly, which is where a significant AI assistance is making a difference process content quickly.”
