Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the right to contest particular rulings made by the official, mirroring the system already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
